party of the first part

   A reference in a written contract that identifies one of the people or entities entering into the agreement: "John Jones (hereinafter called the Party of the First Part)." It is clearer to identify the parties either by a short form of their name or by their role in the contract (e.g., Buyer, Seller, Owner, Publisher, Trustee).
